While it may look good at the put-in, downstream there's likely to be an ice bridge over the river. If there's been an ice dam, the banks could be steep and icy. If you encounter one, there are three things that can happen:
- You Portage
- Stash your gear and hike back upstream to the put-in
- Get swept under the ice if you can't land your boat and climb up the banks which may be covered in ice.
I know some guys that tried it this time of year once. They got stopped by an ice dam and wound up caching all their biggest boats, portaging, and floating out on one guy's 8' or 10' tiny raft they were able to portage. By mid Feb. it was clear and they were able to return for their gear.
Be safe, enjoy skiing this time of year and be safe doing that too.
