The trick is to dedicate countless hours to refreshing your computer and scanning time frames between a couple rivers that you really want.. Then just pray that eventually one of the Black R's becomes a yellow A. then click on that and book it as fast as possible.. It helps if you have a desk job and just keep recreation.gov open in a window at all times.. refresh it before and after you do anything.. then when your at home make sure you have a smart phone and can check it while at the dinner table, when you get up to pee at night, first thing in the morning, last thing before you go to bed at night.. it will help if your single, if you aren't single I hope you have a very solid relationship because the amount of time it takes to find one can put stress on the relationship.
I have been very successful in playing the cancelation game. I have got a prime hells canyon for the last four years and have got either a main or middle fork every other year.. we actually drew a permit this year so I just have to pick up a prime hells.
Another thing that helps is if you and your wife both have an account. then you can just pick up any trip you find and keep searching for a better date and try and upgrade. Any trip is better than no trip at all but it helps to have one that fits your schedule.
also august main salmons pop up a lot on short notice. so if you can pack your shit and leave or don't take much time to get a group together start looking for august main salmon permits. they really seem to start popping up around the end of July.
