Dogs on Grande Ronde?

Thinking about a Grande Ronde trip in late June. I have heard from friends that they've seen many - MANY - rattlesnakes on their trips down this river, to the point that they recommended against bringing dogs. Anybody have experience or knowledge about this? (We have a 3 1/2 year old Lab who has seen rattlers but not many, and likes to explore off-river and off-trail)

I grew up in Lewiston and have spent some time on the Grande Ronde. I have only actually seen two rattle snakes on the Grande Ronde. I have anyways brought my dogs to the Grande Ronde without any issues. Both were Labs. I have hunted all around Lewiston and it seems that Labs know to stay away. Or maybe the snakes are not all that aggresive. I have done alot of bird hunting in those canyons and I have never meet anyone who has lost a dog to rattle snakes. But snakes are a legit concern. For what its worth, I'd take my dogs and let them be dogs.

I was out there last weekend and didn't see any snakes, in past trips I have seen a ton. We had our dog on both trips. On the snake heavy trips, the dog gets tied up in camp.

My only GR trip was 3rd week of June last year. Even with cool weather, we saw lots of snakes including the one in the photo, right in our last camp. I'd be really careful with dogs, but if you and they have some experience around rattlers, you know what to expect.

Thanks for your replies, everybody. Based on this, and what I've heard from local friends, I don't think I'll bring our Lab along. Not worth the chance of her stumbling onto a rattler and getting bit.

You might look into the rattlesnake vaccine for your dog... it is supposed to reduce the severity of the bite..
