Costa Rica Family Rafting

Headed to Costa Rica in June with the family and looking to do more than just the beach thing. I hear Pacure is the absolute best river to be on, but I don't have multiple days, nor do I think they will let a 10 and 13 year old on the boat (well, at least the 10 year old).

As such, looking at Savegre (III) and Narango (III/IV) given where we are staying. Narango write-ups say there are some class IV, but then it says they allow 8 year olds, which I cannot connect. We'd go guided, but my 10 year old is not ready for something on the scale of the Numbers or Royal Gorge. Anyone with experience on how each of these compare to say Browns or something else in Colorado that I would know?

There were some young kids on the Pacuare when we did it in June maybe 10 or 11 12 I didn't ask, they had 5 safety kayaks and the guides were great. I think it was setup one kayak per raft and and an extra kayak.

Only have experience on the Pacuare.

In June it probably won't be high water. It was pretty low when I did it, and I'd say it was similar difficulty to Browns at 1500ish. There are a few more Class IV drops than Browns, but nothing significantly bigger than Zoom Flume, just a few more of them.

Check out Costa Rica Descents. The owners/brothers are from a town nearby and often guide or run safety kayaks on the more difficult trips. They are much safer than some of the other companies operating in the area. I've been on commercial trips before and those guys shattered my expectations.

I personally like the Savegre a lot more than the Naranjo. I feel like it has more to offer in the fun factor, although less pucker factor. All of the CR rivers change class dramatically with flow. Big water Pacuare felt insane to me. You can also do the Upper Savegre with the Rafiki folks for a nice long day of wet fun. But I may be biased.
