Challis to Stanley

Does anyone have any advice on floating, camping and fishing between Challis and Stanley, ID. We would like to run a couple small (8'-10') cats and a gear boat and probably spend a couple of nights.

You could put in below sunbeam dam, or by O'brian campground and float down to the challis area. Above sunbeam will be very rocky and shallow, also I would bet that this time of year there is ice that you would have to deal with. The river will be low and technical above the east fork salmon. It mellows out after the east fork comes in and there are a number of good holes to fish. There are many campgrounds along the river, study google earth and find some good ones, Bayhorse campground comes to mind. You might also consider the day stretch section below the town of North Fork, Id. You could float all the way to Corn Creek if you want.

First off, have fun, it's a great float. As said earlier: rocky about the Dam. I'd put in below Piece of Cake, the rapid after Elk Creek. It's just a rocky mess with the "Fence" showing at this low level.

Camping, there's plenty of places to pull over or camp grounds you could just stop at. Deadman's Hole is a great spot to fish, as are most of the big pools both before and after the East Fork. There's more private land as you get closer to Challis, so be mindful.

The fishing will be better as you get further down, it's cold so most of the Cutties are downstream in the bigger pools. The Bulls will be awesome. Get something that sinks and send it to the bottom of the big holes and get ready, they'll hit a fish pattern like a freight train.

Let us all know how the trip goes, go sooner rather than later as ice will be a HUGE issue in the next month.
