Cataract Canyon September.

This is my yearly MountainBuzz post.
Looking for recent BETA on Beaches on CAT. Did High Water leave us some quality beaches prior to the confluence?

Any camping on Lake Powell this year? GYPSUM? DARK CANYON ? SHEEP BEND?

And lastly. Dirty Devil ? How is the ramp this year? Able to drive down?

Any other River Hazards?

THANKS

Just got off Cat this morning.

I started at Potash, and there were tons of great sandbar beach camps before the Confluence.

If you have the new rivermaps book, the Lake Powell camps at Gypsum, Above Easter Pasture, New Face Rockfall, Fallen Slab, and Rock Fall are all in good shape. I don't remember if the across from Dark Canyon or Cove Canyon sites were good - I was too busy relaxing in the bits of shade there to pay any attention to those camps. There is nothing after the Rock Fall camp just before Dark Canyon. I had planned on camping at Mille Crag as I had done years ago, but it was such a mucky mess that I just rowed to the takeout instead.

There are two more rapids than are shown on the rivermaps book - both are easy read and run.

Dirty Devil ramp is in the best shape i've ever seen it.

The current was fast until just before Cove Canyon, slowed down quite a bit by Dark Canyon, and was mostly gone just after Mille Crag Bend. I got lucky with zero wind and rowed from Big Drop Beach to the takeout in a very long day.

I'm going to take the opportunity to ask what "getting the beta" means?

The people you talked about asking you about fly selection in cheeseman were trying to "get the beta". When you were asking me about places to fish that didn't have someone in every hole you were trying to "get the beta". Savvy?

Beta is a rock climbing term for specific information about a route.

Use of the word "info" is more understandable than "beta". My opinion. But beta is a cooler sounding word, for those who want that.

Cataract Canyon September.

It's just a new term I've heard in Colorado that I've never heard before. I've guess I've figured out what it's referring to, just didn't know what beta meant. Now I got the beta!

Hey Atg200, glad to hear that the rivermap was working well for you. Loski, see if you can borrow Atg's copy. It also shows the camps in Meander Canyon above Cat. Hope you have a Great trip! We may see you in there in September, yours, tom

You often see "beta" on blogs as a term for more/latest information. I thought it was based on beta testing; i.e. the latest greatest information available. I just assumed that, however, so probably wrong.
