Get "The Emerald Mile" now. Turn right to page 362 and start writing down titles. A lot of what he references has already been mentioned. I'd highlight the following:
"Cadillac Desert" is great but dense reading.
Edward Abby, in general
"There's This River" - great short stories means easy to pick up and put down.

The Doing of the Thing by Dimock and Welch. A good read about Buzz Holmstrom

The Last Voyageur by Vince Welch. Good bio of Amos Burg.

Both books do a great job connecting to historical river runners, and are well written.
