Urgent: Raftguide & Kayaker needed for Guatemala Rafting

Guatemala Rafting Company
Hiring Raft Guide / Safety Kayaker

Guatemala Rafting is looking for a raft guide / safety kayaker for the months of October 2008 – half feb 2009 (end of the season). Guatemala Rafting is a small rafting and kayak instruction outfitter that has been operating on the Rio Cahabon for the past three years. The Rio Cahabon is the most well known river in Guatemala class IV-(V). Guatemala Rafting runs day trips and two day expeditions as well as instructional kayak and duckie courses below the famous clear water pools of Semuc Champey.

We are looking for someone who has prior paddle raft guiding experience and feels comfortable safety kayaking on class IV whitewater. We are a smaller company so there is more opportunity to bring your experience “up to bat.” Being small also puts a little extra pressure on the guides to fill boats with clients. We are located in Lanquin, Guatemala a few meters downstream from one of the most famous hostels in Central America, El Retiro Lodge. Here at the lodge we ask our guides to “do the tables;” this is where we go around talking up rafting and seeing if people are interested in our upcoming trips. So in short we are looking for experienced river guides, who are outgoing, like talking with people from all over the world, work hard, and who just fit in to the relaxed traveler environment of El Retiro and the small mountain town of Lanquin. Lanquin is a small low key Guatemalan village with very friendly locals, beautiful scenery, traveling backpackers, simple local restaurants, and a solid hub for personal kayaking trips on the Rio Lanquin, Semuc canyon, Rio Oxec and others.

As a first year guide you will earn $45 a day for day trips and $90 for the expedition (45 x 2). We also provide housing, a nice little private stilted hut above the river. The owner’s house as a kitchen and fridge so buying food and cooking is not a problem, food is very cheap. As a guide you also get a 30% discount on all the food and drinks in the El Retire Lodge Restaurant.

If you are interested in working with us at Guatemala Rafting you can email or phone:

Granted this is not a position where you could save any money but Lanquin is super cool out of the way village in the Guatemalan jungle with tons of young travelers coming through. I could think of a lot of worse ways to spend the winter than hanging with hottie unattached Euros and floating rivers. Plus there are quite a few 1st Ds down in there worthy of exploration.
There's a whiff of the lynch mob or the lemming migration about any overlarge concentration of like-thinking individuals, no matter how virtuous their cause.
