I've run a driftboat from a few miles above Stites to the confluence with the Main river. Fortunately it was the middle of the week and Lolo Pass was closed so not many people on the river, other wise we would have had to wear helmets due to all the flying rocks. But I doubt that's where you'll want to be in April.
I wouldn't expect a warm welcome from your old buddies the bank maggots.
I'd seriously wonder if the best tool for better access wouldn't be a little kick boat (mini cat). Put it in, run across or down slightly to that hole that caught your eye, fish, then row back across and haul it back up the bank and walk back to your rig. Repeat as necessary. No shuttles, no real worries on big water because you can scout your little runs. If there's a few of you do the same thing with the mini-me. That's what I'd probably do.
I'm thinking of heading down this weekend, but the water is already on the way up with a lot more rain forecast. If I go, it might just be to hang out with a buddy and hope to bounce something in fish's mouth.
Yesterday's gone on down the river and you can't get it back. - Agustus McCrae
