Seems like some body (or bodies) die there every 5 years or so (just an old guy's guess), even commercial trips. Yes, strainers -- new ones can pop up over night. Not saying don't do it -- many, many do. Just FYI, the stretch above that, from Pacific Creek to Deadman's Bar does not have that issue.
The only overnight I have heard of that includes GTNP is to camp below Moose (start wherever) I THINK on BLM islands -- but you should look into that before doing.

Regarding "more or less a float" -- the relatives of the people who died on a commercial trip some years ago pointed out that it is indeed marketed as a "scenic float" (vs. the "whitewater adventure" of downstream).
