showin paddler mom and pop our Western water. recommends?

hey all, i'm a boater from over slc way and Im doing the planning for my folks on a non-commercial raft trip. Thought you'd be a great bunch to ask.

Both have canoed some fairly stout whitewater (open tandem ww canoe) raising us along the way.

4 conditions to sell them on this trip (non-commercial):

1) 3 day rafting run, May or June. I'll be in my creeker.

2) Class III's and class IV's so they have a choice of which to run. Rowdy is not their end goal.
(They're quite active. brutal wind/chop on 2-3 day seakayak
trips, hikes w/1-3k of vertical), but they ARE both 61).

3) within 5-6 hours of SLC in ANY direction, so i can get rafter buddies interested.

4)Any good birdwatching and day hikes along the run will definitely sell them.

(They're the type that email photos of moose, a rare wolf or two, and Great Blue Herons as much as photos of my niece and nephew).

thanks! gonna be a good spring runoff!

Edit: for all you non SLC, UT folks, Glenwood Springs is about 6 hrs if i recall correctly. Moab is 4-4.5. Idaho's Payettes is 6.

They've not rafted but given ww canoe experience give em a 1/2 hour and they'll pick it up quick.

after putting my northern minnesotan eyes on to gauge how they'd dig IV's out here, they'd probably be happier in just class III.

Westwater at 3-5k or the Main Payette at 6-8K would be their upper limit, if that's a helpful reference. (I realize may or june Westwater or the Main isn't that low but, that gives a good reference point).

Deso would fit most of your criteria, except it's 5 days & no class IV. May-June would be a good time to go, but there would be mosquitos at that time. Permit required.

San Juan from Sand Island to Mexican Hat, or Mexican Hat to Clay Hills. Great scenery, hikes, good weather in May-June. Class II/III. Permit required.

Another, milder option would be Southfork Snake. Conant to Byington. Class II, nice camping, fishing, bird watching. Definitely a laid back 3 day float possibility. Pretty tame stuff, but you could stop for a day run on Alpine Canyon for your class III-IV fix depending on weather & flow. Self permit at Conant.

Lodore would be a good one if you can bag a permit.
