Kayaking and rafting in BC and the Yukon

I am doing a Selway trip on memorial day weekend and then driving up to the Tatshenshini for a 4th of july float. I will be bringing my raft and 2 creek boats. My brother is coming as well for the whole trip. I have the river gypsies guide which mentions some river around whistler and another whitewater book from 1986. The information on rivers seems pretty spotty in that section of Canada. I am a solid class 4/5 boater but my brother is a 4 boater. Does anyone know any good runs in BC our the Yukon for that time of year. Doesn't matter what kind day trip, overnighters, or park and huck (would really like to drop some falls while I am up there). I figure we cannot be the first people to drive from Idaho to the Tat so any recommendations on what to boat in the month of June, between those two trips would be much appreciated.

You might want to post your query on This is a website based out of Calgary with a lot of knowledgeable boaters. Also, check out Current Kayakwest News for contact information where the guy can give you info and there are some writeups.

Claudia Schwab's guide Whitewater in SW BC will cover some of your trip. If you come back down the west slope of the rockies, there are a ton of runs covered by Stuart Smith in his central and southern guides to Canadian Rockies Whitewater. Many runs last into Aug if not year round because of glacial feed (for now). SEast side rockies runs end earlier. Smiths books are hard to find. Try Headwaters Press Ltd. Wish he would revise and republish.

We have found there are not a lot of other paddlers around so you might want to take a bike for shuttling. The runs may not be flossed as regularly as you are used to so you may need to scout more than usual (it was hard to even find some runs). There are boaters in Kimberly, Nelson, Golden, Red Deer, Calgary and probably lots more. Seemed they were spread thin even tho it's a boaters paradise. May be able to get you a lead or two if you know more where you will be. Have fun. Leroy.
