Jarbidge Carnage

This is an interesting clip.. I find myself second guessing most of the actions taken after the nasty boat pin -- gear isn't worth your life. But I wasn't there.

Funny what people call fun sometimes. I won't be joining them any time soon, but if they want to thats fine.

Its not my place to say if getting that gear was worth it since I haven't done that river and not sure the circumstances but it certainly was risky to say the least. That said, they must have known what they were getting into and the risks involved and at the end of the day its their decision to take the risk. If they were forcing someone else to take the risk I'd be more critical, but that wasn't the case it seems.

I did it once with a group of eight with 7 boats. We had one 13' raft and six kayaks. I can't recognize the rapid in the video, but I'm guessing it's the main falls. The thing is, you really don't have many ways out if you leave a boat. It's a pretty boxed in canyon, and I couldn't imagine hiking downstream or hiking out. It took us hours to portage Jarbidge falls, we only made about 6 or 7 river miles the day we had to portage the falls, and we had no choice but to walk everything. There wasn't enough water to get a raft down the falls like they did. Bring lots of rope should you attempt it.
Wishing I was on the river instead of surfing the web...

That is Jon Barker dealing with the new rockfall rapid that happened just downstream of where they were camping the night before. They heard the rumble. This is the one that drowned out Sevy Falls I think. Anyways, Jon laughs about it and admits it was not his easiest day on the water. But I can guarantee there is no one I would rather be in a predicament with than Jon!

The second half of the footage is Jarbidge Falls. Tough day.
