Animas River Days, June 5-8, 2014
(Durango, CO) As Animas River Days kicks off this next week, the river is rushing through the new whitewater park. The holes at Smelter Rapid and Corner Pocket roar as boaters fight the current to stay lined up straight and remain in their boats.
The raging water welcomes back the annual Animas River Days, which is appropriately themed, “Floating into the Future.” The Whitewater Park is very near completion and construction at Santa Rita Park will begin soon.
There are plenty of races for all levels of boaters, including whitewater slalom, boatercross, SUP races, freestyle, inflatable rodeos and inflatable relay races, downriver kayak races, raft sprints and so much more. And, of course, the river parade on Saturday at 5:30 pm is not to be missed.
Film Night, celebrating the best paddling films of the year at the Smiley Building, kicks off the four-day whitewater festival on Thursday, June 5th at 6:30 pm (doors open at 5:30 pm for yummy food by Zia Taqueria, beverages by Ska Brewing and Zuber Fizz).
Listen to live music throughout the weekend. Elder Grown and DeerPeople play Friday night at the Animas City Theater (presented by Durango Massive). Doors open at 9 pm, $10 cover, must be 21 years or older.
Starting at noon on Saturday, Stillwater Foundation brings a plethora of music to Santa Rita Park. Enjoy the tunes of Sound Company, Katie and the Hooligans, Grove Casters, 32nd Street Collective, and Live Wire.
After the river parade on Saturday evening, you can shake your hips to The Great Funktier at Ska Brewing, 7:30 pm, $5 cover. A late night party at the El Rancho features Soul Atomic.
The musical fun continues on Sunday at noon with One Roof Blues and Bermuda Collective.
