SF Boise Canyon New Rapids
I thought I'd post a video of the new rapids on the SF Boise Canyon. To start , Raspberry has a log across the entire left side of the river. The normal line, right of center to center is open, but the margin of error is very narrow. I would rate Buffalo Creek a class V- with class V consequences. The only line is a 'sneak' on the left. At 1,800 cfs, it looks doable in a raft or kayak. Not sure what other flows would be like. It's a big rapid and you really want to stay hard left to avoid a violent eddie on the right and a rock pile center left and a log jam river right at the bottom. Fiddler Creek looked like a class IV+, normally class IV. There's a 3/4 river wide hole at the bottom of this drop that has to be punched on the left side of it. If you flip there, you'd have to role up quickly to avoid being shoved into a log jam. Being July 4th, we thought it was strange to only see one other party putting on the river yesterday. Too little boating for a class V boater..too much hassel for anyone else to do regularly. Everything significant can be walked. A fully loaded raft could take 2 hours to portage Buffalo Creek. A good rafter would likely opt to run Fiddler Creek, but if not, the portage would likely be less than an hour. Unloaded rafts would be much easier to portage. We floated over a submerged log in the rapid above Fiddler Creek on the left at 1,800 cfs. This could be a problem at lower levels. There's also an interesting new rapid below the takeout (I think).
