Pit Toilets between Pumphouse and Radium Removed
The pit toilets at Cottonwood Campsite, Cabin Campsite, and Benches Campsite were removed this past week (April 2014). The pit toilets are the “outhouse” like toilets at the river campsite and NOT the vault toilets at Pumphouse, Radium, or State Bridge. All boaters are encouraged to bring/use a portable toilet or WAG bags with them on ALL trips, but especially on overnight trips this summer. The BLM Kremmling Field Office is currently working on Supplemental Rules for the Upper Colorado River which will make portable toilets/WAG bag and fire pans mandatory on all overnight trips.
BLM was ordered to remove these by the EPA because they are considered large capacity cesspools which have been banned since April 5, 2005. These pit toilets meet the classification of “Class V Injection Wells” as defined by 40 C.F.R. 144.6, 144.81 and 146.5. 40 C.F.R. 144.12 (a) and 144.82 (a)(1), and specify that no owner or operator shall operate, maintain or conduct any other injection activity in a manner that allows the movement of fluid containing any contaminant into underground sources or drinking water, if the presence of that contaminant may cause a violation of any primary drinking water regulation or may otherwise adversely affect the health of persons.
