RRFW Riverwire – Development Committee Takes Up Tramway Legislation Tomorrow

October 24, 2016

The Navajo Nation Resources and Development Committee will consider legislation to construct a tramway in Grand Canyon tomorrow at Tse Bonito, New Mexico.

The meeting will be called to order at 10:00 AM New Mexico time and will be held at the Nataani Room, Navajo Nation Department of Transportation Complex, on P and M Road just north of Highway 264, two miles east of Window Rock, Arizona.

An official with the Resources and Development Committee noted the meeting has a large agenda of items to consider and seating in the meeting room is limited.

According to sources in Window Rock, the Resources and Development Committee is not in unanimous support of the tramway development.

The tramway legislation is sponsored by Resources and Development Committee member Ben Bennett. Recently, Bennett questioned the validity of the tens of thousands of comments against the tramway construction as the comments had not come from members of the Navajo Nation. An advocate for a tramway-free Grand Canyon noted Bennett is ignoring the fact that the developers of the project are based in Phoenix, Arizona, and include non-Navajo members.

The tramway legislation must be reviewed by four Navajo Nation committees before the legislation goes to the full Council for an up or down vote. The first committee to review the legislation, the Law and Order Committee, unanimously voted it down.

After being considered in the Resources and Development Committee tomorrow, the legislation will go to the Budget and Finance Committee. It is not known at this time where and when the Budget and Finance Committee will consider the legislation.

“I personally encourage anyone interested in this issue to attend these meetings if at all possible” notes River Runners for Wilderness Council Member Tom Martin. “We owe it to the Navajo Nation Tribal Council to show our support for preserving the Grand Canyon, even if we have to wait outside these meetings. This destructive tramway scheme is not the way to protect the sacredness of the Grand Canyon, nor is it the way to provide much needed jobs for the residents of western Navajo.”

River Runners for Wilderness encourages its members to write to the Navajo Nation and Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell. Tell the Nation and Secretary Jewell:

-You are opposed to Navajo Nation Legislation 0293-16

- You support a tramway-free Grand Canyon.

- Ask that Navajo tribal funds be spent on vital needs such as housing, sanitation, telecommunication and water supply projects across the entire Western Navajo lands.

- Remind the Navajo Nation and Secretary Jewell of her duty to work with the Navajo to protect and preserve the Grand Canyon as the 1975 Grand Canyon Enlargement Act required.

You can send your comments to the Navajo Nation here:

Or in writing, mailed to:

Navajo Nation law requires that all comments, either in the form of letters and or e-mails must include your name, position title, address for written comments and a valid e-mail address. Anonymous comments will not be included in the Legislation packet.
