From Powell To Power:

Grand Canyon author Tom Martin will present a 50 minute behind the scenes look at Otis ďDockĒ Marstonís book From Powell to Power: A Recounting of the First One Hundred River Runners Through Grand Canyon.
Submarine Commander Marston first floated in a wooden boat thought Grand Canyon in 1942. Five years later, he started to write a history of river running in the Grand Canyon. What he thought would be a six month project in 1947 kept Dock busy over the next thirty years. Along the way Dock amassed a huge collection of first-person accounts of these river runners, from James White on a log raft in 1867 to the first Grand Canyon powerboat runs of 1949 through 1951. Marstonís book is unparalleled in the depth and breadth it brings to recounting the history of the first 100 river runners through the Grand Canyon.
This presentation includes historic film footage of Marston and other river runners from the 1940s through 1960s. Martin will touch on who Dock Marston was, and look at some of the highlights of Marstonís recountings of the First 100. Copies of Marstonís book will be available for purchase at these presentations.

Big Water Little Boats:

Grand Canyon author Tom Martin will present a 50 minute lecture on Big Water, Little Boats: Moulty Fulmer and the First Grand Canyon Dory on the Last of the Wild Colorado. The presentation follows the whitewater exploits of Moulty Fulmer, the builder of Grand Canyonís first dory during the high-water heyday of river running before Glen Canyon Dam. Fulmer manages almost forty years of Colorado River boating between 1942 and 1978, where he boated with Norm Nevills, Frank Wright, Dock Marston, Pat Reilly, and Martin Litton, besides rubbing shoulders with many other river runners who were Fulmerís contemporaries.
This presentation includes film clips of the first dory to run the Yampa (1950), the 1957 126,000 second feet flow as it looked at Boulder Narrows in Grand Canyon, and a short clip of Walter Kirschbaum running his 4 meter kayak through Lava Falls in 1960!

Hope to see you there!
