Thanks everyone for the encouragement and advice. I’ve moved to a duckie to try and get comfortable in moving water, practice my strokes, and try to learn to read the river. I will still carry my boat to every pool session I can. My main obstacle now if finding a paddle partner that I am confident in – that is willing to do the boring stuff with me.

Thanks again everyone!

I had the biggest problem staying with the sport.
My dads really, really into it and so i felt like it should be too.
But I couldnt get my roll - our most recent trip on the Grand Canyon was my first combat roll (i still swam...hole) but i've been doing it for 2 years now.

Then my dad, my brother and i went to the pool and in one night i had my roll. Once you get confortable being upside down its much easier. My brother and I were jumping on each other, trying to hold each other over....it really helps when you go with someone youre confortable with.

Also, have a signal for them to help you back over like tapping the bottom of the boat or something so that you dont feel it necessary to swim every time.

Other than that...DONT FREAK OUT IF YOU FLIP
i would always bail right away
just hang out for a few seconds and orient yourself
then try it
