Costa Rica info needed

I am headed to Costa Rica for the month of March. I am planning to stay with a host family and study Spanish for the initial two weeks then I have two weeks on my own to see the country, surf, hike, etc. I want to travel on the cheap, buses, hostels, camping etc. Any info you have would be great! How safe is it for single gals to camp? What would you bring for a month?
