2013 Women at the Worlds!

Squirt boating, to the uninitiated, looks suspiciously similar to sea otters frolicking in the shallows. Starting on the eddy line, paddlers mix flat-water cartwheels with various twists, turns, and paddle flairs. The runs are capped off with the aptly named mystery move where the longer the boat stays submerged the higher the points go. Yesterday saw the prelims for squirt boating followed by the prelims for the K1 Jr. Women. The full results here: Index of /home/scoreboard/pdfs I focused on three US women competing yesterday.

Meet Risa Shimoda: USA Women’s Squirt Boater, inductee into the International Whitewater Hall of Fame, Chair of the USACK freestyle committee, had her 58th birthday yesterday!

Meet Tracy Hines Click: US Squirt boater currently sitting in 4th place after prelims. And by “meet” I mean meet her mystery move! Tracy has Colorado ties after working as a kayak instructor for the Dawson School east of Boulder, CO. Anyone who has met Tracy knows here nickname, Alabama, is well earned and her enthusiastic approach to kayaking is contagious!

Meet Kady (Kadrian) Kellogg: Junior K1. The Kellogg’s, as many are aware, took to the road to follow the water as so many kayaking teams have done. Unlike those teams, they are a single family of 14. From Glenwood, Kady and the Kelloggs hit all of the major whitewater festivals in Colorado and Idaho (Kelly’s), after which they ventured up to the Ottawa. Yesterday, Kady took 4th, between US Rowan Stewart’s 2nd place and US Lauren Ryan’s 7th place. Rowan and Kady will move on to the next round. As with the men, the jr. women came to the international stage packed with the skill to show that the state of youth paddling in the USA presents a valid and exciting podium threat. It’s worth noting, however, that the jr. women’s field was just under 1/3rd of the jr. men’s with only 10 competitors.

Today marked the start of the Men’s K1 preliminaries with the Women taking the water tomorrow. Again, you can watch all of the action live at
On the river, I can abandon who I am and what I've done. However brief it lasts, while on the river I am nothing important and everything insignificant. I am flotsam, and happy to be so.
