First Annual Gunnison Rivers Symposium

Hello Everyone

On November 10, 2007 we will host the First Annual Gunnison Rivers Symposium from 4-9PM in the Kebler Ballroom on Western State Campus with all proceeds to benefit the Gunnison Whitewater Park. The event is FREE, we are hoping to raise money with the raffle. We've got hundreds of dollars of stuff so far, and we're looking to procure more raffle items to raffle.

Itinerary of Events:

4:00 PM Doors Open

4:15 Welcome and Introduction of Sponsors, Purpose, Philosophy, and Approach

4:30 PM First Keynote Speaker: Daniel Gonzalez of Futa Friends

RE: Daniel will discuss the state if the rivers in Chile and Endesa’s (electric company) planned damming of them and the effect it will have on the ecosystem and the native inhabitants. Daniel may explore economic alternatives such as the development of ecotourism in the area.

5:00 PM Second Keynote Speaker: Dan Piano of Steamboat Springs

RE: Dan and friends (Routt County River Enforcement-for you Mountainbuzzers) have done four first descents on Colorado creeks in Routt County in the last two years. Dan will have footage and photos and will explain how these descents were accomplished.

5:30 PM Third Keynote Speaker: Mike Wight and Stephen from Nederland, CO

RE: Last July, Mike, Stephen, and 6 others embarked on an ambitious expedition to Northern Quebec to run the obscure and gigantic Rupert River. The Rupert peaks at 180,000 c.f.s.! Their plan was to run it in canoes, portage the unrunnable, high-flow class VI rapids while documenting the sate of the river in its free-flowing state with video and still photography before it will be dammed! The politics of the proposed damming are somewhat sketchy and these adventurers plan to expose the dynamics involved by producing a film documentary. They have a trailer for the movie and an involved slideshow and discussion for this event. Movie trailer @ youtube.com "The Mighty Rupert"

6:15 PM Dinner Break and Socializing

7:00ish Film Premier(LVM's latest Kayaking Flick) Begins

8:30 PM Raffle Drawing

9:00 PM Doors Close

Afterwards: Afterparty at the Gunnison Brewery. Ten percent of proceeds will go to the cause.

If you are in the area and can make it, DO!

Thanks,
Kevin Heiner
