Thanks everyone for your input....still am bikeless, but looking. Bshack...where are you located? This bike may be a little heavy, as mentioned above, I could see how a big bike could become cumbersome on steep trails. If you laid it down in the woods down a steep slope, how would you get it back to the trail?

Regardless, if i find something, I will post back.

I wouldn't buy a bike to ride in the dirt if I couldn't pick it back up.

It can be tough, I am a decent sized guy but the hill I was on was in AZ and the ground was hard pack dry AZ dirt with rocks all over it, and steep as hell, so everytime I lifted it I would slide downhill! took me about 20 minutes to figure out I had to drag it sideways across the hill into a ditch where the ground was not so slick, get it pointed downhill and then climb out of the ditch without having the bike go over on me. To say the least it made me want a smaller bike.

A dr650 for 1500 bucks sounds like a great deal. this site is great!

I am going to look at bshack's bike on Wednesday. If it is good, I am going to buy it. I just hope it isn't too much bike for me. The gas mileage is probably not going to be as good with a 650 as opposed to a 350. Oh well. I think I will love it! Thanks for all the good advice. This site does rock!

KLR 650 for sale

I just talked to a work buddy who said he's sell his KLR 650. It's a 1996-7 with approx 3k miles and has e-start. You can reach him, chris in Eagle at 970-904-6061 if interrested.

Hope this helps!

Anything that's a 650 dual sport is going to be WAY TOO HEAVY to ride single track. Sub-300 #'s is mandatory IMO. Sub-250 is ideal. Fire roads, street, etc. will be fantastic though. So you can't have everything. I had an XR250 for a while and it was a C- on the highway, but a B+ on trails. I rode a KLR 650 for a while at Christmas and it was a beast (in a BAD way, D+) off the pavement, but I'd give it an A- for the road. Plus it had panniers on it and that made it even worse.

Now I'm rocking a CRF450R with a lighting kit and a Rekluse kit (to help with stalling in technical stuff) and it rules off road. Probably 225 #'s dry weight and it wheelies in every gear. Course if you rode it on pavement there'd be a bread crumb trail of nobbies in the road behind you.
