For the 80th time this year, 80 year old Laurent Maverick Gadreau will hike from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to the South Rim. Each Rim to Rim is 21 mile long with an elevation loss of 5,800 feet and gain of 4,800 feet. Maverick will complete his 80th Rim to Rim, covering the last 1,680th mile, tomorrow, October 8, 2006.
In the last 9 years, Maverick has lost 40 pounds and now weighs in at 130 pounds. Maverick says hes in the best shape of his life. In 2005 Maverick hiked 45 Rim to Rims.
Known as Maverick to the locals at the South Rim Village, the octogenarian has been living at the South Rim for the last nine years. Born in 1926, the retired school teacher met his third wife at the South Rim in 1997.
When asked what drives him to hike the canyon Rim to Rim over and over, Maverick says he does it for the love of hiking and to inspire others. His favorite saying when asked how hes doing sums it all up. Wonderful is his ready reply.
