Everyone hates the Kurds, who are Christian and in the vast minority
Actually the Kurds are Muslim, not Christian and make up about 20% of the total population of Iraq and the majority of the population in the northern 1/4th of the country along the Syrian, Turkish and Iranian borders. Additionally, the Kurds have large populations in the contiguous regions of Syria, Turkey and Iran and some organized groups of Kurdish separatists have been active in fighting against all of those countries as well as against Saddam's Iraq.
Either the author of the letter simply isn't nearly as well informed as he thinks he is, or the whole thing is propaganda. I'd guess the latter.
Just what we need, more American mis-understanding of other cultures, religions, countries and issues. Next time, do your research.
Failure to understand tribal mentality is a big mistake. Regardless if the are whatever sect of Islam, or Jewish, or Christian or just plain worshipping some tree frog that licks its eyeballs. It all comes down to inter-tribal relationships.
People in the Middle East have been at each other's throats for thousands of years. Some of it for valid reasons, most of it not for any cohesive valid reason(s). They respond in sometimes civil ways, sometimes very barbaric ways.
Americans on the whole have lived a mostly comfortable life, far removed from the recesses of the world where toilets don't always flush (if they exist) and where hot water is a thing to be done to make it safe to drink.
We don't wake up to the sound of car bombs going off and finding out our favorite Aunt was beheaded for her religious views. We are a blessed society of people and laws (sometimes too many laws).
But there is a reason "we" are not like them. That reason lays in the foundation of our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Though we have had a checkered past with Slavery, Civil War, and Racism. We have still managed to survive and overcome those evils as the longest running true democratic government in the world. Americans on the whole are all about fair play and equality. The same cannot be said for a great portion of the rest of the world.
You may annoy me when you call the CinC a liar or some kind of one world government Iluminati whatever thingy, but I for one will respect your right to voice that, however strongly I disagree with it. You knuckleheaded do-gooders who'd never make it out alive from BCT go travel elsewhere in the world and voice your opinions about their governments, their leaders, and see what happens to you.
Iraq on the surface may seem a vastly grave mistake. But you have to look to the long term gains, not the short term. If it takes 50 years for them to get their shite together and stablize, will it have been worth it? If you look back at US history, it took us longer to get out act together.
Maybe Iraq will fracture along ethnic/tribal lines, would that be bad? Probably not. But it would be better if they took our example and learned to live in a mostly content diverse society. But, ... therein lies the problem, they're a tribal mentality. So how do we break that? That one is the billion dollar question.

Actually, it's more like a half TRILLION dollar question at this point. Don't forget to carry the compound interest on that out 50 years when you're doing these cost-benefit calculations as to whether or not what might be the outcome half a century from now is worth today's payment in blood, treasure and US prestige around the globe.
