African Americans and other "minority groups" in the U.S. DO NOT HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY TO ACHIEVE! Have you been to a public school in an area populated with minority groups? They are underfunded and understaffed. There is also the fact that college graduates enjoy the selective hiring practices of groups that went to college in previous generations, so many underrepresented groups are not only never taught how to go to college, but they learn that they are way less likely to find a job after college.
By giving money to people "checking the right box" we are trying to increase access for these groups to higher education. Here in Wyoming we have a much lower percentage of hispanic students going to college, despite more available scholarship dollars, extracurricular academic organizations, and Hathaway money. These programs are helping, however. Without those resources the separation of races in Wyoming would likely continue for ever. Because of them we are making progress.
Mike, I work for a non-profit in Cheyenne that helps underrepresented groups in Wyoming find their way to higher education. Interestingly enough, Wyoming has a huge percentage of the largest underrepresented group in higher education, students from rural communities. They face the same challenges and many of us in the industry think there should be more "Rural student" boxes to check.
I'm all for equality and I see your concern, but without helping minority groups overcome major social obstacles to get the education they deserve, we are just perpetuating racism.
