Let me also say I don't endorse her and wouldn't vote for her. The guttural hatred of her that is a bit frightening. From the things I've heard and read from the left in America if I were her I'd be concerned for my family.
You mean like somebody on the Buzz threatening to kill her?
There is obviously something very threatening about Palin as well, given the amount of effort spent tearing her and her family down.
Most certainly, and it's not her intellect. It's the idea that such an uninformed, inarticulate flat-earther might actually ascend to a position of real power. That is very threatening!
Recall that she was a nobody whose crazy views were unknown outside of Alaska until Billy Kristol and his neoclown pals decided to turn her into a "star". With her national ambitions came scrutiny. Seems appropriate, don't you think?

I'm not a Hillary fan, and never have been, but I'm pleased with the work she's doing at the State Dept. No, Hillary isn't going to inspire adolescent fantasies ala Palin, but apparently her intellect is pretty threatening to those same Palin wankerboys.
Dude, she hasn't done anything. They issued an Amber Alert for her today. She's been completely marginalized and believe me I don't miss her cackle a bit.

Yeah, traveling 70,000 miles in her first 100 days and meeting with world leaders to re-establish America as a member of the global community is "nothing". The "Amber Alert" slam was kinda cute, but totally absurd. Nice try, however!

Rip, as funny as you can be, your amp is at 11 too much of the time, my liege. Sometimes I just want to hear the honest opinions of people from the other side - don't you?
I do agree with Rip that what was threatening to me about Palin is that someone whom I consider vapid could advance so far with such a glaring lack of capacity to govern from a consistent intellectual position. I don't want to rehash the past, but her interviews (such as they were) showed her to be under-educated for national office. Whether she was/is fit for Alaska was not my concern, and I've tried to be fair to her in how she manages that job.
I get a healthier joy out of being proven wrong (and thus learning) than of being proven right (and thus gloating and patting my already large ego).
I don't have a problem with the social conservative movement, per se: That's their right to pursue a social political agenda. My issue with her on fiscal policy was another matter, and in particular, her speaking out of both sides of her mouth (with poorly constructed sentences, ta boot!).
If she wants to be a national player, she has to bear the slings and arrows of outrageous accusations: If you win those small battles long enough, eventually the public becomes immune to the rumors and the appearances of impropriety (reference: Hillary Clinton/Bill Clinton). And if you're charismatic enough (and she certainly is: Even I am drawn to her, particular in runner's world - she has legs, man), allies will pay for your legal defense (again, reference the Clintons).
On the legal front, either she did not have the stamina to outlast the conspirators (which appears to me to be the case) or she was not popular enough within the enclave of the beleivers to gather the necessary funds (which I don't think was the case).
To expect to ascend to a higher role after resigning mid-term is ludicrous and more narcisstic than I can stomach from any politician. If my favorite candidate did this, I would lose faith in what I saw as his/her character upon this news.
Ancillary to this is patterns:
Now, it may come as a surprise to the throng of heliodoriacs (that's what I call my cultists) that yours truly has spent enough time in therapy sessions that a Top Secret clearance isn't in his future, but I've learned that you have to look for your patterns and cease them by understanding them.
Palin now has a history of 1) paranaoia about a free press (some percentage of that can be empathiszed with depending on your political bent) and 2) Quitting jobs that aren't going her way. The latter is a troubling character flaw, and it appears to me to be a pattern.
Again, if I had been a supporter (and there was a brief period where I saw her as a shrewd player), I'd be re-assessing my faith in her.

I have no reasonable response, other than I too love "Spinal Tap".
Time magazine explains that there's a lot more to the legal defense accounting than one would think. Alaska law requires her to use her own money to defend herself (which means, probably at best, she'd have to pay income taxes on any 'legal defense fund' contributions).
I learned some things from the Time article. It's a quick and good read.

It's fair to say that Palin has been hit with a series of dubious-at-best, utterly frivolous-at-worst, ethics charges. That's a crappy way to undermine your political opponents, i.e., bleed them financially as they are forced to defend themselves with pricey attorneys, but before you feel too sorry for Palin, read this:
Word is she got a cool $4 million up front for her memoir. That'll pay her attorneys and leave plenty left over for Todd's snowmachines and expensive Alaska gasoline. The Palin's aren't heading to the poorhouse anytime soon. With political fame comes slings and arrows... and big money.
