Oh, it's far worse than that. It's far far worse.
It's funny that an administration which will not discuss the meaning of the term 'marriage' has engaged in such unctuous weasling on the meaning of the term "torture".

Quote:
Four of the prisoners were held at Guantanamo beginning in 2002 for one to almost five years. All 11 were released without criminal charges. ...
Those examined alleged that they were tortured or abused, including sexually, and described being shocked with electrodes, beaten, shackled, stripped of their clothes, deprived of food and sleep, and spit and urinated on.

So we bring guys in, beat them, piss on them, lock them to the ceiling for days at a time, then we release them without charges. WITHOUT CHARGES?
And if you're out there saying "who cares what they do to the Haji's and towelheads over there" bear in mind that this can be done to AMERICAN CITIZENS simply by declaring the American a "domestic terrorist" for any reason the Executive branch decides (and they don't have to account to anyone for putting an American on the list). This HAS been done to Americans (Jose Padilla being the most egregious case).

Discussing what the law permitted when it comes to interrogation, Levin, quoting from the minutes, Fredman said: "It is basically subject to perception. If the detainee dies, you're doing it wrong."
The response, from Guantanamo chief of staff, Lt. Col. Diane Beaver: "We'll need documentation to protect us."

These guys knew full well that what they were doing was illegal and immoral and in violation of US & International law.
As an aside to Liv, yeah I think this president should be impeached AND convicted, but the political ramifications of such an effort aren't worth the cost-to-benefit. THAT's why I say Bush should be tried as a War Criminal in The Hague. He'd stand no chance of acquittal.
We're a half-step away from Gestapo tyranny, here, Americans!
