Pretty good article on agriculture subsidies and water usage

Stumbled across this article this morning. Since I dislike market distortions like subsidies on general principal, it resonated with me.

Thanks for sharing and I imagine it will be an interesting read. I will say my first response is "WTF, why are they growing cotton in the Sonoran Desert"? I am guessing I am not alone.

It takes a pretty profound crisis to change those types of entrenched interests. I don't think we're there yet. But you don't need to stop there. Look at the competitive constraints placed on entry into the river shuttle market, or guided raft trips. And it's not just us. Much of French wine production is nonsensical, subsidized by the Brits and Germans.

And the legacy is profound. One of the wealthiest families in Europe is the Tun und Taxis, who got a monopoly on the Holy Roman Empire's postal service in the 1500s. It was eliminated centuries ago, but the family still has enough money to be weird-rich.
