Seriously, Theo, stay away from World War II logic or I'll be forced to unleash my own Shock and Awe campaign of facts and figures on you. It will bore everyone to tears.
To give you a small taste:
Tunisia is across from the Italian Peninsula. We attacked French Morocco, and Algeria as Operation Torch kicked off, which was a Vichy territory as of November 1942, and there was no Wehrmacht presence there. Technically, we attacked France in November 1942 (always a safe bet; they surrendered in a couple days and then joined the Free French).
Conveniently, Rommel and the Deutsche Afrika Korps was a thousand miles to the east, having just lost at El Alamein in Egypt to the Brittish a few days before we invaded west Africa.
