It has also been noted that gasoline prices are high because of a shortage of refineries. This is in part caused by every metropolitan area requiring a different blend of gas and chemicals. Refineries need to produce x # of gallons for Chcago then pump it, then they need to make x 3 of gallons for the Chicago suburbs and then pump that, and so on and so on. If everyone could agree on one mix that suits everyone environmentaly it could cut the cost of production. It is also important to note that they haven't built a refinery since the 70's due to the amount of environmental litigation involved. Even if they decided to build a refinery today it would take about 10 years to even begin to build it due to all of the legal permiting involved and then the additional time for all the lawsuits that would happen by all of the enviro groups to be setteled. Like the posts above everyone uses oil, alot of it goes toward things that you wouldn't even think of, alot of the current oil price rise and demand has been caused by the rampent growth in Asia, China and India mostly.

Good points, cma, and all valid reasons that the price of petroleum products must moderately rise. The oil companies should pass the increased cost of production on to the consumer. But they don't stop there.

Marco, I didn't mean to come off so hostile, it just chaffs my ass to hear the kind of attitudes that foster corporate irresponsibility. It's not our fault that we're being gouged. Consumerism is rampant in our world and in this country most of all, for sure, but I think most people would embrace a new form of energy if one was presented. The desire to stifle new technology doesn't come from the people, it comes from a source with deeper pockets and connex in washington. A source with a lot of capital to lose if we no longer need oil.

BastrdSonOfElvis, I completely agree.

However, at what point will people wake up and see the insanity of this oil debacle? I doubt it will be the owners of oil, so who is left to stand up and say enough?
