Ok so for the sake of arguement. Say it was one of the most hated players in the league and say he happened to injure a star player so significantly that the player could no longer play.....

Say that a player premeditates taking another player out in a game?

on the other hand of this arguement.. would you have to somehow deputize referees?

Boatnbike,
whats was Steve Moores' role on the Avs? in the hockey world goon is define as what? a month or so before that incident what did Steve Moore do to Bertuzzis' teammate? You've been schooled son.
Todd B retaliation went horrible but it was a retaliation of what Moore did in a previous game, Todd B skated around the whole game trying to get moore to settle it "old school" but he didnt... doesnt justify how TB went to get revenge but if Moore would have knuckled down, maybe things would have been different, dont know?
gh, no worries just messin with your head, take care.

PSU, its cool and I agree with you on the Moore/Bertruzzi incident. I believe Moore went after Naslund who was leading the league in scoring at the time. Bertruzzi let frustration take over and definitely did it the wrong way but his reason for doing it fit inside the hockey rules of conduct.

PSU,
Thanks for the tutorial but again, you're long on opinion and short on facts so let me enlighten you. If there was a “goon” on the Avs, it was Worrell, not Moore. Yes, Moore did hit Naslund in an earlier game and knocked him out but no penalty was called and the NHL took no subsequent action against him. Brad May did call for a bounty on Moore, however.
During the game of the Moore/Bertuzzi incident, Moore and Matt Cooke dropped the gloves a few minutes into the game (to settle it “old school” as you refer to it). That was one of four fights in the first period prompting the NHL executives to phone the referees at intermission to discuss this lopsided game possibly getting out of control.
After the refs warned both teams, there were no more fights until the Avs scored for an 8-2 lead midway in the third period when Bertuzzi went after Moore. Those are the facts, which I don’t anticipate will change your narrow-minded opinion, but for those who are interested, you can read the CBC’s account of it here:

so there is only one goon per team is that what you are telling me? Moores role was to be an instigator a GOON, no way did he deserve what he received but I dont believe TB tried to seriously injure the guy but wanted to do what Moore had done to many players before...I know long on opinion but thats what the original question wanted to know opinion not facts....look I am not sure what you disagree with but no need to regress and start name-calling.

As a former college and professional basketball player I can honestly say that professional sports suck big time. Not everybody agrees with me on this, and there are those that say I just don't like it because I'm no longer involved, but here is my opinion. Many, not all, but many professional athletes are spoiled rotten. Not only do they make millions of dollars for participating in an activity, a great deal of them don't work hard at it or even care about anything other than their money, they complain about practice, they complain about coaches, they are not good teamates, some are very poor citizens, they get arrested, drunk, drugged up and so on. Not that I care about any of those vices. Just don't bitch about penalties for violating the rules. Again this is not all athletes, but for every Jon Lynch there are three T.O.'s or Chad Johnson's, or McSorley,s or Bonds. The problem is the money has outweighed the love of the game. When I was in training camp with the Nuggets, playing in the CBA, playing over seas, nobody loved to play, including myself, it was all about money so passion for your career ended, and about the only thing that would get you going was just plain old aggression, so fights happen. Does anybody realize that on top of all the money they get paid guy's int the NBA get in the area of $300 a day for food while traveling on the road. I know most companies cover food expenses while traveling, but $300, lets be realistic. Every thing on the level of a professional athlete is exageratted. The spotlight they live under, the money they get paid, the expectations they are held to, so I think any fines and penalties handed out should be exageratted as well, those guys got what they deserved. Maybe not enough. Ask yourself this, if you decked a co-worker, would you get to keep your job? Maybe when pro athletes act a fool they should lose their jobs and have to eek out a living in the real world like the rest of us, after having spent time with some of these so called professionals that would be a joke. I think they should scrap all pro sports and just start over all the games are great and enjoyable, thats why I love college the kids actually care and for the most part enjoy what they are doing, and if they get in trouble there are usually consequences of some sort except at the University of Miami. So let's all just drop the pro sports junk, let them flog themselves and go paddle or ride!
