Rebuilding the railroad system in this country isn't "spending our future," its common sense. Its far cheaper both financially and resource wise to transport somebody by train than it is by pretty much any other method. I remember reading a while ago (and this is purely my frequently dysfunctional memory) that per person fossil fuel expenditures for diesel trains compared to automobiles, assuming something like a 50% occupancy rate on a train, is about 1/1000. Just that environmental rate of return makes this worth investing in.
I agree with everything you have just stated. We just can't afford it right now.
