Ugh. These kind of partisan-baiting comments are so destructive because they keep the discourse from touching on anything meaningful. They keep the populace deeply divided; and the aristocracy/plutocracy/oligarchy/corporatacracy (take your pick of these political terms) absolutely loves it because they continue to win.
Let's face it... The republic isn't breathing anymore. We lost it. The representative democracy that the framers intended us to have has been lost - but hopefully not for good. The disintegration of the republic and the disastrous shrinkage of the public realm have a long and complicated history. For those who care, or are beginning to care, it would behoove us to drop the partisan blinders, to stop with the partisan-baiting and to begin trying to understand the deeper systemic problems.
While partisans cling to and defend the ideology of their preferred party bureaucracy the (mis)representatives are doing the bidding of their political donors - which equal approximately .5% of the US population. Lawrence Lessig: We the People, and the Republic we must reclaim | Video on TED.com
Look over there! It's their fault! Meanwhile, the House just torpedoed a bill that would grant lower interests rates to students on school loans. Instead they would prefer that student loan interest rates double on July 1st to 9%, while they continue to grant interest rates of .75% to the same banks who crashed the economy with their reckless and criminal behavior. Should we blame Obama for the actions of the House too? Maybe we should blame Bush Jr? No, I got it.. let's blame Nixon!
Me? I'll simply point out that the political system no longer represents me, like the framers of the Constitution intended it to. Not only will I point this out, I will say that there is possible solutions to fixing this problem. But that is going to take all the partisans to put their partisanship on hold and work together with the political opposition to fix the rules of the game first
- a very difficult, but not impossible task. It is also going to require the people
to exercise their faculty of action
- this faculty of action is a gift that has allowed the human race to continually progress throughout the ages; this faculty of action is what allowed the American revolutionaries to consciously set out to break the shackles of European monarchies and create an unprecedented new form of government.
This future of this country isn't set in stone... but it will certainly continue to proceed in a tailspin if this kind of partisan-baiting continues unabated.
Oh, btw... Happy boating season, my fellow boaters!
