Last words of the US Af-Pak ambassador are:

Richard Holbrooke, American Diplomat, Dead at 69 - ABC News
According to his own family:
You've got to end this war in Afghanistan.
But will the Americans notice? Can't say it wasn't reported. ABCnews right there...

You can say all you want that the corporations are running the show, and the media abrogates its responsibility and I generally agree. But if the American voting public doesn't care (and by all indications they do not), then you can't say the corporations don't reflect the culture. They do.

We live in a society where literacy has no importance. We are a culture that rejects all need to contemplate difficult concepts, and when confronted with them, commit ourselves to the circus of outrageous narcissism until we forget those concepts even exist.

"self-aggrandizing jackass" - it says it right on the label

As a voter I still feel powerless, even if I believe a non-Dem or non-Rep candidate can change the US and I vote for them that candidate will never win unless the voting system changes.

I think the entire political system of Dems vs. Reps does nothing other than divide us so we may be conquered.

What can I as an individual do to change the world??

I am not sure there is any division. They both seem to do the same things. Republicans bitch that we are bankrupting this country, and then vote to extend tax cuts with a hefty cut in estate taxes which of course helps almost no one that isnt rich. Every Republican president over the last 30 years has spent like there is no tomorrow and now the dems are as well. I really dont want anymore friends to be hurt or die in these stupid wars but it really is easy to see that they are too expensive to maintain. Its easy to see that the terrorist tactics are working and they are breaking us. They spend 150k to bring down the towers, we spend 1 trillion dollars plus in wars and I have no idea what on creating homeland security and all its tentacles including the airports. Its really sad to watch.

Fundamentally I agree the parties aren't that divided but the voters certainly are - I have friends who don't like the president simply because they are Republican and feel that Democrats are ruining the world.

Also apparently Holbrooke's final words were in jest: Holbrooke's Last Words On Afghanistan Downplayed As Joking Exchange By Obama Administration

I dare say that many in both parties want the war to drag out. Haliburton and it's subsidiaries made a killing during GW's reign. Now we have Raytheon lobbyists in the DoD cabinet positions. I am sure Raytheon is enjoying the real world testing of it's weapon systems, so are Boeing, General Dynamics, Lockheed, Nathrop Grumman, etc.... If these parties were so fundamentally different why would the list of large campaign donations come largely from the same select companies?

While these links don't paint the whole picture they show an alarming trend...

Raytheon election spending: Notice that in the 2008 elections Rayteon spent nearly TWICE as much as they ever had, and in 2009 William Lynn was named Undersecretary of Defence.....
