I've been away, so forgive me for responding to a week's worth of posts. Feel free to skip.
Yeti I wasn't calling you out. Most of the time I'm on your side; I was pointing out that like all water crafts are acceptable on the river, all discussions are acceptable on the internet, even a whitewater forum.
[quote]It might be a fact that more guns = more violence in society, but I challenge you to argue for that without banning smoking, drinking, motorcycles, loud music, and titties for all the trouble those things cost.
The solution to social ills is not, I repeat, IS NOT banning everything related to those ills until they go away. It is education, family, and a system of social and self nurturing. Oh yeah, and time. Not everything will be perfect in your lifetime. Your great grandmother couldn't vote when she was young and it was illegal to marry someone of a different race in your parents (or maybe your) lifetime.
Oh, and in case you didn't catch the overarching point here, NOT EVERYTHING IN LIFE IS SAFE! Life is risky. It always has been. It's dangerous to run whitewater, dangerous to drink whiskey, and dangerous to have unprotected sex with strangers. But you know what, the freedom that I feel when I do those things is so worth it. [quote]
Randaddy- Have I told you I love you lately? I would argue that more guns= more death, not more violence, and as for unprotected sex with strangers- remind me not to have sex with you.
DgoSteve- I empathize with your snow problems....
WODS/Demosthenes- Joking about which gun could kill a person easier is comparable to dead baby jokes. When you can't fix something-you have to laugh about it. Tell me that in your life, as PC as you are, you have never laughed at a racist, disabled, hippie, or even a blond joke.
Additionally, you continue to ignore the FACT of illegal gun ownership.
As river runners, we do community service every day by picking up other people's trash. Banning handguns and assault weapons DOES NOTHING to stop their illegal trade in the US.
Boatmusher- It is true that at Columbine, the law enforcement refused to go in until the situation was "under control" resulting in the death of at least 1 person, possibly more. Having said that, as I said on another thread, I would never have a gun in my classroom-I can't find my pen half the time. Please don't use school shootings to defend or demonize gun rights. Kids are different than ANY other group of people. At the same time, I guarantee that 90% of my kids have guns in their homes where I teach and most of them know how to use them. I AM NOT AFRAID OF THEM.
You are probably older than a draft would require.
The quote you are looking for:
- Abraham Lincoln
- "This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can excercise their constitutional right of amending it, or exercise their revolutionary right to overthrow it."
People often think it's Jefferson.
Also, it's not just liberals who protect only the amendments they adhere to- very often those who support the 2nd amendment want to deny the 14th.
RDNK- As I said, I don't have a gun and don't want one because I would be one of "those people" who it was taken from and shot with, but one of the wisest people I know owns more guns than I can count and I've told him- When IT happens, I'll come plant vegetables and you can protect us. He thinks that's just fine too.
Abbey-ites- It didn't work. Reread the Monkey Wrench Gang. Then think about the tax dollars it took to rebuild. Then put your resources into forming a coalition to unite Native populations to use the mass of land they haven't- constructively, conjunctively, for the good of all. Destruction does nothing but cost money.
I guess that's it, other than to say Cmike- you make total sense- just PLEASE use spell check- you're killin' me!
