Ain't no "luck" to it. Define "not necessary". A nail gun isn't "necessary" but I own one just the same.

Your neighborhood is not in Iraq. Or maybe it is, the buzz is pretty international. Just the same, if you're putting 5.56 rounds through my house I'm returning fire, I don't care if you are getting robbed.

And the best place to shoot griz is of course squa in tha nuts.

Not only their skulls but also their hides (and at some times of year their fat layer) are so thick, you'll be lucky to bring down a bear with anything before it does some serious damage to you. It might die, but probably not right away. If you can get a shot off into its open mouth (tough to do I bet while shitting your pants) that would probably be best.

I've heard the pepper spray is the best deterrent-- plus the bear gets to live. But it reminds me of a great joke:

When in Alaska, you'll want to wear bells so as to not surprise the bears and carry pepper spray in case of any encounters with aggressive bears. it's also important to know what species of bears are in your area, be they black bears or griz. The best way to tell is to examine the scat. It's simple...grizzly bear shit smells like pepper spray and has bells in it.

I'm so scared of grizzly bears I think if I was out in their habitat I'd schlep a M60 belt fed 7.62mm machine gun like Rambo. Or a bazooka. Or his exploding arrows.

I forget where I was reading this, but in terms of Alaska, I heard that black bears are more likely to be looking at you for food, whereas grizzlies will be looking at you as a territorial threat.

If Tim Treadwell had had pepper spray, odds are he'd still be alive.

I've also seen a report from the Army that 5.56 is being reported as inadequate knockdown power in close quarters fighting in Iraq. The M4, from what I've read, isn't a particularly great weapon for house-to-house.

I don't know why the Army hasn't adopted a bullpup design, and I think it's probably time to get a round with more knockdown power for close quarters, but don't ask me. I worked with 120mm cannons. They can kill bear and have plenty of knockdown power.

Remember, the army is restricted to FMJ by the rules of warfare. Civilians can use JSP, JHP, and frangible ammunition. There are all great for decreasing overpenetration and increasing incapacitation potential against unarmored targets.

The Federal or Remington 55gr. soft point of a .223 will penetrate LESS than a 147gr 9mm HP through dry wall or stucco surfaced walls.

All I'm saying here is that an M4, with an EOTECH, and a blinding Surefire with pressure switch loaded up with 30 rounds is a far better option for clearing the rooms in your house than a shotgun.

Pumps shotguns are easy to short stroke under stress but hey if your budget doesn't allow for training then stick with the Remington 870 noob canon. <cheers>

Non issue with Sierra Black Hills 77 Grain or Hornady's 75-grain HPBT TAP.

Self defense isn't clearing a room in most cases.

Absolutely, just point and shoot. I use a co-witness flip up rear sight with a fixed front sight post just in case. Some think the front sight post in the sight picture is annoying, but I don't even notice it's there.
