Not that I plan on needing to kill a bear, but I'm stunned a .357 won't do the job. What the hell are bears made out of?

What about so-called armor piercing rounds?
When you're shooting a bear, do you even bother with the body, or just hope for head shots?

I will chime in on this. I think the .357 is a bad round allround. Its way too fast for round the house. I mean how many walls do you want to penetrate, seriously, think about it. Chances are this encounter will be at night. Have you ever shot one of these at night? Man the amount of smoke and fire that comes out of the barrel and chamber will blind the crap out of you. Its the same reason that I wouldnt use slugs or 00 buckshot round the house. Number 6's will do serious damage at 10 feet and wont penetrate through your walls, your neighbors walls, etc. If you have a look at the legal system, you dont want to shoot someone farther than 10-15 away. The grand jury will be having a hey day with your ass.

[quote].357 or .45 are both excellent rounds for Alaskan Grizzly. Pissing off the bear will shorten your suffering./QUOTE] .45 and .357 are not a good round for a big grizzly or even a small one. .45 is a large bullet with not much powder. This make for a great round up close and great knock down power. The bullet only moves @ 900fps so unless you shoot the bear when it is on top of you, you are hosed. .357 has alot of power but it is a small bullet so this it lacks the power to go through the hide and fat to make a kill shot. This is why a .44 mag is the smallest you want to go. A .44 mag will punch through 3/8 steel plate at 75 yards with a 280 grain bullet.

The bears head is 4 inches of slanted skull. making most head shots bounce off. I have heard of 30-06 rounds that have been found in the skulls of brown bears and even some grizzlys so never aim for the head try to aim for the chest or right behind the shoulder blade.

Well, Colorado Springs is probably a bit like Houston in that sense, or so I hope:

Grand jury clears man of wrongdoing in shooting deaths in his front yard. They were robbing his neighbor's house...
Texas man cleared of shooting suspected burglars - Yahoo! News
Quote:

"Don't go outside the house," the 911 operator pleaded. "You're going to get yourself shot if you go outside that house with a gun. I don't care what you think."
"You want to make a bet?" Horn answered. "I'm going to kill them."
After the shooting, he redialed 911. "I had no choice," he said, his voice shaking. "They came in the front yard with me, man. I had no choice. Get somebody over here quick."
Say what you want about Texas, that's good law right there.

Just like South Park, yell real loud "He's coming right at me!" and then shoot.

FWIW - Those are exactly the weapons we are using for clearing houses/buildings in Iraq. The M4 with an EOTECH and some frangible ammo does that job quite well. The Sound of an M4 bolt locking forward is a distinct sound. Muscle memory is not just for the kayak roll.

Yeah I would hope Colorado Springs would be friendly to that but I got on a murder trial here in the springs a while back. The first 12 jurors would have found you guilty of murder no matter what. They didnt believe in self defense in any case, its the police's job. Yeah right, its their job to draw a big chalk outline round your body and question any hot women who heard a gunshot.
