I was registered with the AIP for many years when I lived in Alaska.
I can understand why her husband was a member of the AIP. To really relate to where these folks are coming from you have to study the history of abuses by federal government agencies on the everyday people of Alaska over the many years since statehood. They are fiercely independent and don't like to be pushed around.
During the 1970s, Joe Vogler founded Alaskans for Independence
to actively pursue secession for Alaska from the United States
The Alaskan Independence Party quotes Vogler as stating "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."
