I've heard of water boarding, something about wrapping a guys face in cloth and pouring water on the cloth??? That doesn't seem that bad.

So, what exactly is water boarding?

Water boarding is the method of torture that the was used as early as the Spanish Inquisition and later by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia to get false confessions out of hundreds of thousands of people during the time of the "Killing Fields." It sounds pretty tame at first but when you recall that people are willing to give a false confession during it, knowing it'll lead to their death, you realize that it's not just some fratboy prank but is a form of torture. Many CIA types question the validity of any intelligence gained from its use because people are willing to say anything to get it to stop.

Waterboarding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nothing in the world is more yielding and gentle than water. Yet it has no equal for conquering the resistant and tough. The flexible can overcome the unbending; the soft can overcome the hard. - Lao Tse

I note the following from Wikipedia:
Through forced suffocation and inhalation of water, the subject experiences the process of drowning in a controlled environment and is made to believe that death is imminent.

CIA officers who have subjected themselves to the technique have lasted an average of 14 seconds before caving in.

"'The person believes they are being killed, and as such, it really amounts to a mock execution, which is illegal under international law,'

Long term effects include panic and gasping for breath whenever it rained even years after his abuse."
OK, sounds pretty bad. Forced inhalation of water is no fun.

Amazing that our country would so this. Sometimes, the ends do not justify the means. Now we join the ranks of the Khmer Rouge, WW II Japanese, the Gestapo, and the Spanish Inquisition.
