The only link on their website was to Jok Church (Christo & JC do not use email according to the site). I sent him the link to the buzz asking if someone could address the concerns posted. Following is the response.
I have worked for the artists since Running Fence in the 1970s in Marin and Sonoma Counties, California.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude have been working on securing the permits and permissions necessary for Over The River since 1992. All of this process is public, and a part of the artwork.
The posts I read on the web site you directed me to seem to think of Over The River as all-of-a-sudden, and not the on-going public process that it is. We are, after all, 13 years into the process.
An important part of the process is that the artwork can proceed only when everyones concerns are incorporated into it.
I must add, however, that anyone who is stomping and howling about what is, or is not art, has not bothered to look at Christo and Jeanne-Claudes portfolio of work. It has enriched the world and her people.
Please select the menu-item Some Artworks from the Welcome Page http://christojeanneclaude.net
for a complete photographic record of their art.

It would be helpful to get comments from someone in the know to clear up some questions about the project and its impact on the environment.
