Can you get Giardia thru yur butt?

Let me start by saying that kayakers who are annoyed by rafting minutia should tune out now.
My main reason for asking this is that I'd love to get the groover extras (seat, reading material, sanitizer, etc.) out of a heavy ammo can and into a little lighter semi-dry box.
Yes, I know the reading material and tp may get wet...I'll deal with that.
Yes, I also know that you are probably more likely to get it through your butt when swimming. the end I guess I'm just asking for curiousity sake.

What's the answer doc?

You will want to keep the sanitizer in your kit - Giardia can be transferred by drinking contaminated water or from person to person contact, not via the butt.

If you could get giardia or other parasitic/stomach diseases via the poo-chute we'd probably all be walking cases of e-coli.

I guess it might depend on your 'lifestyle'. The San Fran boating club may be a good resource.

Giardia colonizes the small intestine. If you ingest it, the giardia cyst just goes with the flow until it reaches the small intestine and enters its active phase. You'd need to do something pretty strange to get a giardia cyst up through five feet of large intestine to where it can infect you.

The question is, is a frog's ass water tight?
Dude, I'd see you on the river but I'm hardly ever out there.

This is the a funniest thread that I have seen for sometime on the buzz. I guess I am the typical guy.

Don't put that alcohol laced hand sanitizer around your butt if you have a heat rash.
