We are being consistent. It is the Palestinians who are getting mistreated Not the Israeli's.There is without question very disturbing blatantly racist rhetoric in the Muslim world, like Ahmadinijadh's BS,I don't think most of the international left condones that.We may excuse/ignore it more than is appropriate due to over sympathizing with the Palestinians and to us the one sided view that is normally foisted by the media.Part of it is the distinction between racism and discrimination, the down trodden can be racist too, but they can't discriminate they don't control the mechanism's of power.Another way to look at it that may be useful is in the context of a civil war versus just accepting the labeling as terrorists.
I think the left is empathetic towards the Jewish people's struggles on about everything but the Palestinian/land issue.I won't go into a long explanation here but there were other remedies to the Holocaust than supporting Zionism.
To some of us it is Zionism that is racism. The idea that any group of people including over sized ,redheaded, hot tempered, world travelin',democratic socialist class 4 front range mank duckyers are entitled to ANY tract of land on the basis that they're God's ' Chosen People' is unacceptable. It is the religious angle that irks me not their race ,ethnicity ,or culture. If self determination of peoples is the overriding principle what about the Kurds,Chechnyans,Basques,Chiapanecos,Quebecois,Cat alans, or a hundred other ethnic groups without a country including the ,uh ,Palestinians. Please don't give me this there were no Palestinians before 1940 nonsense, there may not have been a strong sense of nationalism as a province of the Ottomans and prior conquerors, but they have deep ancestral roots predating the Jews ancestors in the region and have lived there continuously ,not show up after 1877 years claiming it.Genetics will likely prove this ,the evidence so far is inconclusive but favors the Palestinians. The fact that they have both intermixed with so many other races and have common ancestors muddies things a bit.
In the same way liberals are apologists for the Palestinians, conservatives are equally oblivious to the Israeli's apartheid state and consistently brutal and disproportionate responses to Palestinian violence, not to mention the fundamental injustice of being cast aside off your own land by foreign powers favoring some ancient claima
