I think as Americans we are obsessed with mispronouncing names- on purpose. maybe it's to seperate ourselves from the orgins. Arkansas(non-silent s), Buena Vista(be-you-na), Ouray(your-ay), etc. It's not how you say it, it's what you do while your there that's important.

You know, I grew up in south central Kansas, and that is what we called it...I knew better, but didn't REALLY KNOW BETTER until 2001, however that is what my mother still calls it, there is just no changing it. I just laugh at this point.

Alsina Dearheimer was the wife of the guy who did all the paperwork to get the town incorporated. She was a German national and English was her second language. She was asked to determine the name of the place (formerly called Cottonwood, then Mahonville) once it became an honest-to-goodness town. She is reported to proclaim somethng like "unt it shall be called beau-na vista--like de Americans say". So it was named with the first word rhyming with "Tuna". Never was Spanish. OK, you think it should be pronounced like the Spanish? OK. Do people get to call their own town what they want or what you think it should be? That's while is spell it C-O-L-O-R-A-D-O, but I pronounce it "Cocksucker Springs"

TOURIST: What do y'all do with town when it snows???
LOCAL: We roll it up and move it 10 miles downhill.
Is the water that low? Can't even scrape the paint of the bottom at this point??

The Ark:
Go to Wichita and pronounce that river like the state - I dare you. My favorite mispronounced town: Versailles, Missouri. I think you know how the locals there pronounce it. Others: Nevada, Sierra Nevada, Colorado.

Growing up in Pueblo, I heard my fair share of butchered spanish words. Ironically p-town always seemed to be pronounced correctly...even considering it was the "gateway through which all Texans passed". The mispronunciation of Pueblo I usually heard was "armpit" or "the blo".
