I have read a few articles recently on the resurgence of American made. This was one of the better ones and happened to be gear related.

The truth is that due to tax breaks for trading nations (NAFTA, etc) and cheap labor (which is becoming less cheap as the undeveloped nations develop middle classes) we began to outsource manufacturing. The problem with this is that we will next begin to outsource is the middle managers and engineers to move them closer to manufacturing (Corning recently made an Asian plant to be close to the Cell phone manufacturers). American labor is still far and away superior from a productivity/hr standpoint. However, with many of the developing nations having an increase in middle class, we will likely see production costs will rise and a shift back towards American production.
