do you really live in Saguache?
I am also afraid of socialized healthcare. I am fully aware that our nation has horrible healthcare for the masses. I think part of it is that many people want something for nothing.... It will take a big change in our collective attitudes to really accomplish real change.
I am lucky that my employer provides 'great' insurance. I can speak for it as i have yet to use it, it seems good, but I got lost in all the fine print.....
There are a few reasons I think that Government run healthcare wont CURRENTLY work.
1. Lazy Stupid Americans.
Our country is full of Hypochondriacs. Any prime time TV watching will show that, "ask what xxxxxx can do for you" etc..... I am all for being healthy and taking care of people, but I dont want my taxes to pay for some candy ass to go to the ER everytime they have a sore throat. Even with insurance, I have weathered several colds and flus with no doctor vist. Ther are alot of ailmeant out there with a treatment, but the end effect isnt that bad. Remember RLS (restless leg syndrome)? Apparently the manufacturer of a Parkinson's drug found that since their drug was approved they could instantly market this drug that took care of a minor inconvience...
2. Grey Areas
Say I am smoking a ton of weed, drinking tequila, skiing way to fast. BLAMO! Scott hits a tree! Well should the people have to pay for my injuries? If it was me, I would be inclined to say yes, but what about if it was you. You made the choices to have the 8 Margaritas and straigh line the Birds of Prey course.....
Reconstructive surgeries: What makes a facelift for one person not acceptable for another. I would be fine with fixing a child, or a cleft pallet, but what about just a plain ugly person? What about a car injury, is having skin on your head good, or do we need to pay for a perfect face and hairline? I sure dont know the answer to these questions.
Tobaccy and Whiskey: That one is rough. Judging from my behavior on certain river trips, some people would be inclined to believe that I may not make my next birthday... However should we pay for a 3 pack a day smoker?, how bout a pack a day? how about the occasional smoker? They are all 'smokers' What about drinking? I dont drink much when I travel for work, but sitting around a campfire I may make up for lost time? I average out to be a moderate drinker, but often time 3-4 days its different. Does that mean I am precluded from any liver or gastro intestinal care?
ED: We all know the smiling cheesedick on TV, apparently some little pill gave him a big throbbin woody. He sure seems happy, his wife is happy, and consequently the mail man is now less happy....
3. The big one: CORRUPTION
Well if I am a DR, odds are a goverenment healthcare program pays by the procedeure. Who will oversee whether a doctor actually does what he says. What if doctors prescribes un nessacery med just because he can tack on some more $$ to his monthly bill.
After we start to weather out the financial crisis, this will be the crux of out country. there are a lot of questions and hurdles.
I had a freind from canada who summed up healthcare in Canukistan...
"say you get in a horrific car wreck. Once found a kick ass EMS team takes you to an ER with good ER docs, and saves your life. Only problem is that you broke a leg and wrecked a knee. You are alive, but will have to wait 18-24 months for knee replacement and PT wont reallly help much until then. You are alive but crippled until the few orthopedic doctors can get to you..."
I think as americans we need to marry canadians, and still carry major medical!!!
Whoever referenced Michael Moore above needs slapped. He presents bullshit one sided facts to feed his agenda. Would you recomend watching a 'documentary' about MLK produced by David Duke?
