Update on Summit County huts

This just in from Kyle Burris (Graystrail@aol.com):

=================

Dear Hut Users: Volunteers are needed by various hut associations. We
encourage you to support your local huts, help out and maybe get some free hut use in
trade. Here is volunteer and contact information as well as updates on our
Grays and Bard Creek Huts, and the High Lonesome and Copper Creek Huts.

Please join The Grand Huts Association in the first "on the ground" step
toward building the new Second Creek Cabin. The Grand Huts Association was
recently founded to build a 2,000 square foot public cabin in the Second Creek
drainage. The cabin will include quarters for volunteers, hut rentals and for day
use.

On Sept. 11th and 12th volunteers will re-route a section of trail leading to
the new Second Creek Cabin site. Children and young adults are encouraged to
attend. Much of the work will involve moving topsoil and plants to
re-habilitate the old trail. Bring shovels and buckets. The U.S.F.S. will bring large
tools. Meet on the west side of Berthoud Pass at the second bend. Watch for a
sign and a multi-colored flag. Lunch and drinks will be provided. Bring good
footwear and warm clothes. Please call Andy Miller to RSVP, 970-726-4099. Work
starts at 8 on Saturday and at 9 on Sunday. Come one or both days.

The Summit Huts Association has several upcoming volunteer weekends. Sept.
25th/26th & October 2nd/3rd at Janet’s cabin, and October 9th/10th at The
Boreas Pass Section House. Go to www.summithuts.org and click on the volunteers
tab. You must reserve your space by calling Summit Huts at 970-453-8583 or e-mail
summithuts@colorado.net

The Bard Creek hut site is a new project needing survey, planning and
construction help. The site is 3 miles up Bard Creek road from Empire and then (R)
1.25 miles up the Wild Wagoneer trail. There is an old miner’s cabin to be
rebuilt and a 2nd ridgeline hut site. We plan to get started on the project this
fall with the first work weekend on September 17th and 18th. Construction will
start ASAP, dependent on planning, permits and weather. We will comp. stays at
our Grays Trailhead cabin to volunteers. Please call Kyle Burris to RSVP,
970-262-0120 or 303-807-0420 (mobile) or email Graystrail@aol.com.

High Lonesome Hut: A full service cabin 2.4 miles up from a trailhead near
Winter Park. Ideal for hiking, biking, skiing and snowshoeing. Cabin has
solar electric, full hot and cold water system with indoor plumbing. Sleeps 8 to
12. The cabin is on a meadow, surrounded by National Forest and an extensive
trail network. Go to www.lonesomehut.com for details or call Andy Miller at
970-726-4099.
Note to cyclists and parents: Andy Miller’s teenage sons are building a world
class freeride course and plan to offer downhill, freeride and X-country Mtn.
bike camps, summer of 05’ at the High Lonesome.

The Cooper Creek Hut: The Copper Creek Cabin is located on 175 private acres
bordering BLM lands. This is very similar in size to the High Lonesome Hut.
It sleeps 10 comfortably in three bedrooms and has all modern amenities. The
cabin is located an hour west of Winter Park, but is also close to Silverthorne
and only a few miles from the Williams Fork Reservoir. It is located on a
quiet county road in the Williams Fork Mountains. Go to www.lonesomehut.com for
details or call Andy Miller at 970-726-4099.

The Grays and Torreys hut: Serves as a base camp to climb these 14’ers and
several surrounding peaks. In the summer and fall you can drive to the hut. In
winter it is a 3 mile, 1600' elevation hike or ski from I-70, traveling up a
4WD road from the Bakerville exit* (*This is 5 miles west of Georgetown). This
cozy cabin has one room plus loft, sleeps 6 in beds, has a wood stove for
heat, 3 burner gas stove, sink, dishes, silverware, table, propane lanterns,
outdoor privy, gas BBQ and large deck. Wood, propane and paper products are
provided. For more information go to www.powderbuzz.com/grayshut or email
Graystrail@aol.com or call 970-262-0120 or 303-807-0420. Grays hut rentals are
earmarked for hut expenses, expansion and to help fund the Bard Creek and other hut
projects.
Thank you for volunteering and for supporting your local huts!
K.B.
