Heading to Vail Alone Dec-Jan.. looking for ski buddies
I will be flying into Vail December 26th for a good one month ski vacation over my college break. I live in New Hampshire and ski pretty much every day I don’t have classes but I have never been to Vail. Unfortunately I don’t have any ski buddies who either have the time or the money to spend a month in Vail with me, so I will be flying in and skiing by myself for most of the break. I was wondering if anyone could give me some input of good places to ski? Or even meeting up so I can have people to ski with and learn about some really cool places and not have to spend all day with the tourist on the groomed trails. I’m a pretty good skier and I can ski just about anything so I won’t be holding anyone back. Thanks.
i am actually still looking at places to stay. i'm trying to find a condo to share with some people for the few weeks, seems the cheapest way to go. would you be interested in splitting a place?
Come by The Boot Lab, we can talk and set you up with some appropriate ski bums to hang with. We are in Lions Head village; just ask for the best boot shop it town. Ask for Fred.
hey thanks a lot i definitely will, thats the most important thing for me is just finding some people who know the area. that way im not wandering around backcountry lines by myself. another quick question actually, with limited off mountain lines around here i have only rented beacons when we needed them. are there places that offer to rent them for a few weeks at a time? or would it just be cheaper to by my own now? thanks
Be aware that our snowpack is nothing like east coast snowpacks. If you plan on doing back country lines you better bring your shovel, beacon and probes. Defiantly hook up with locals and read/listen to the avalanche hotline at (970)668-0600, or online at the Colorado avalanche center, to be up to date on conditions. I am not trying to scare you off, but there are those that do come here and jump into the backcountry after it has been dumping big and get found in spring.
ya agree completely. I've done my fair share of avy safety here in NH, places like tuckermans ravine on mt Washington have had huge slides, especially last year. so i'm no novice when it comes to backcountry but skiing with some locals would make me feel much safer

Before you go wandering around backcountry lines here "by yourself" with a rented beacon, do yourself a favor and check out the CAIC accident reports on East Vail last year. You need to know what you are getting into here.

not like i have never skied backcountry before. ive done my fair share of avy awareness and done the drills many of times. im not a novice skier that hasn't been in anything deeper than my shins! backcountry skiing and avalanches are nothing new to me actually, but thanks though. but another reason why i would like to ski with some people so i wont be bymyself just incase something could happen.
but im out dudes, snowing like crazy here gonna go rip it up!
Buy yourself a beacon, and you will be free from rental problem of the future. Why trust a rental anyway when you can find Trackers for like 250 and shit. It's for your buddies really though. Think snow, we need it!
