Your favorite warm gear...

Hi, have always been known as the polar bear because cold didn't really matter. Now getting cold (granted, it snowed a little yesterday) and looking into some warm gear. Recommendations? To date all I have done is long underwear under a not-at-all dry top, and skull cap. I know there are now some good warm when wet layers out there, wondering what the best bang for buck is. And yes, I know my dry top needs work/replacement if I want to stay warm. Thanks for the input!

Depends on how warm/versatile you want. I have an NRS farmer bill wetsuit(less than 100 bucks) but the farmer John is nicer. Less versatile but much warmer is the NRS steamer(150) which has a great bang-buck ratio. If you're looking for super warm for less than 200 dollars, I'd say steamer wetsuit and gloves/booties.

I like the IR polar skin for the top. Warm but usually not too warm but my temp is running colder nowadays so I like the warm stuff.

If your in need of warm base layers check out the Immersion Research Union Suit or the Stohlquist Bunny Suit. Those will keep you warm even when wet.

Get new gaskets on your drytop if needed and then spray it down with some of THIS Get some cheap polarfleece from ebay/Goodwill/Craigslist for a base layer. Try a vest under your drytop to keep your arms free to paddle.

For the bottoms I used neoprene socks (warm), topped with goretex waterproof socks (dry) and then wore NRS Blackrock drypants. You won't freakin drown in them like some will scare you into believing. I've swam my ass off in multiple Class IVs with no issues at all. They are dry and warm and resonable. It's all how you layer the tunnel w/the pants. Keep your eye out for a used pair. Why be wet if you can be dry for the same price?

Cover your head with a skull cap and some neoprene gloves/poagies
