what size paddle

I'm 5'7" and just bought a 191 cm river running paddle is it too small?

you should be alright, just paddle around and feel it out. As you improve you can better gauge your strength and decide if you want a longer or different blade type.

Pretty close, maybe a little short. I'm 5'6 and use a 192.....should work fine for you though.

Paddle size seems based on the idea that arm length (i.e., wingspan) is equal to height. It's usually close but could be off by about 1-4in! So rather than choosing a paddle based on height measure your "wings" and compare that to the paddle length height ratio!

If it feels right when paddling then I'd say your set. Personally I'm 6' and use a 188cm paddle. By most standards that is way too short but I like it for playing, increased stroke rate and doesn't trip me up when doing tricks. I usually creek with a paddle a bit longer 191 or so but won't ever go any longer than that.

Borrow or rent some paddles to try out (longs, shorts, straights, bents, feathereds, unfeathereds).

I'm 5'7". My creek paddle is a 202. My play paddle is 194. Both unfeathered.
